FAQ

They’re constructed with treated pine.

Yes, we’ve designed a simple trellis to be placed along one side of the garden bed.

What should we wear? We’re usually happiest when we’re wearing comfy clothes that can get dirty (and even wet!). We also recommend closed toe shoes when working with sharp shovels and garden forks. We will plan to stay outside in light rain, so check the forecast and dress appropriately!

What is the material of the 4x4 bed?

They’re constructed with treated pine.

Does this raised foot garden include a trellis?

Yes, we’ve designed a simple trellis to be placed along one side of the garden bed.

Is there a rain date?

We will not reschedule for light rain, but if the weather is predicted to be stormy in the morning but clearer in the afternoon, we might move the workshop to 2-5pm, that same day (May 21, 2022). If the entire day is stormy, we will move it to May 28.

What else will we need, beyond what’s included in this package?

  • site/ location for your 4×4 garden that gets at least 8 hours of sun/ day.
  • a larger spade shovel
  • a watering can
  • a smaller garden trowel is also helpful but not absolutely necessary, as kitchen spoons and sand shovels, or even hands can work in a pinch.
  • a garden fork is also helpful, but unnecessary.

Can I attend with my grandchild, godchild, niece, nephew, or other special kids in my life?

Absolutely!

Do I need kids to attend?

Absolutely not! I’ve designed this garden with kids in mind, but by no means are they the only ones who will benefit.

Can I buy additional 4x4 gardens, or even build my own, if we want to grow more?

Yes! One of the reasons I’ve chosen a 4×4 square foot garden is because it’s so scalable for those who want to establish bigger gardens in future years. For our family, we grow most of our own veggies in several 4×10 beds laid out in the exact same way as what you’ll be learning with a 4×4 bed. I would encourage you to start small, just so it doesn’t become overwhelming. But if you are excited to tackle a bigger challenge, by all means go for it! Let us know in the comments what you’re thinking and we can give you some options. Additional beds can be purchased from us (along with soil amendments, seeds, and live plants) from us for $129 each.

Can I make substitutions in the veggies you’ve chosen?

Yes and no. If you want to get your own seeds or go to a garden center for your favorite veggies, by all means go for it! That said, we’ve intentionally chosen things that tend to be kid-favorites in our gardens, and varieties that we think will work well in this particular space and climate.

I don’t think I can fit a 4x4 bed in my vehicle. Can I assemble it at home?

You sure can. You’ll just need access to a power drill and we’ll provide the rest. Please let us know that this is your plan so that we don’t have to disassemble it when you arrive.

How soon will my garden need to be planted after the workshop?

We’d recommend doing it as soon as possible, even later that afternoon! May 21 is fairly late for planting spring crops, so if you wait much beyond that some of what you plant will turn bitter or even stop producing in the summer heat.

How are these being offered for free?

We believe that gardening can be tremendously empowering and life-giving, particularly for kids. We want more young people to experience the pride and wonder that we have seen in our own children’s faces, as well as in the dozens of others we’ve had in our gardens through the years. We don’t want cost to be a barrier for any family that wants to jump in and get their hands dirty. So we are delighted to offer these gardens and workshops at no cost, simply asking families to consider “paying it forward” by donating to your local food pantry or favorite non-profit.

I still have questions. How can I contact you?
